La Comisión Europea, órgano ejecutivo de la UE, inició el miércoles sin previo aviso una investigación sobre el importe de las subvenciones estatales que reciben los fabricantes chinos de vehículos eléctricos.

«China’s new energy vehicles exports are seeing stronger volumes not due to huge state subsidies, but because of the highly competitive China industrial supply chain from strong market competition domestically,» Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association, said in remarks on his personal WeChat account on Thursday, according to a CNBC translation.

He continued by saying that Chinese vehicles exported to Europe typically retail for almost twice as much as they do in mainland Chinese marketplaces.

The chairman of a China automobile industry association said on Thursday that the European Union should «objectively» take into account China’s electric vehicle industry and its fiercely competitive industrial supply chain.
The European Commission, the executive branch of the EU, abruptly opened a «anti-subsidy» inquiry into China’s EV manufacturers the day prior.

Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association, stated in remarks on his personal WeChat account, «Personally, I firmly oppose the EU’s assessment on China’s new energy vehicles,» according to a CNBC translation.

Instead of unilaterally using unilateral economic and trade measures to hinder the development or raise operating costs of China’s electric car goods in Europe, he continued, «the EU should view the development of China’s electric vehicle industry objectively.»

China’s exports of new energy vehicles are increasing in volume, according to Cui, not as a result of significant state subsidies but rather because of the country’s fiercely competitive industrial supply chain.

He continued by stating that most Chinese automobiles exported to Europe are sold for almost twice as much as those sold in markets on the Chinese mainland.

In her annual State of the Union address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen remarked, «Europe is open to competition but not for a race to the bottom.» She also confirmed the investigation.

Her announcement represents yet another hiccup in relations between the EU and China. Additionally, it comes after the U.S. and Europe decided in late May to cut back rather than sever all ties with Beijing.

The commission mandates that within 13 months of its inception, an anti-subsidy investigation must impose sanctions. Additionally, it states that if legal justification is found, final measures may be implemented after four months of provisional measures, but no later than nine months.
